Winter Sports and Activities
From world-class dog mushing to the World Ice Art Competition, Fairbanks has a bounty of winter sports and activities to offer up to families or individuals looking for a remote and quiet winter getaway.

Winter
Winter in interior Alaska offers the opportunity to experience many types of winter sports and activities like: Cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, ice skating, hockey (the Nanooks are the town favorites), and sledding. Many folks go ice fishing or are out skijoring with their favorite pet. Because our lakes and rivers freeze solid in the winter, sometimes we have new shortcuts to our neighbors' homes. Living in Alaska, always brings daily adventures and challenges!

Summer
Summers in interior Alaska bring us 24 hours of daylight--much deserved and needed after a long, cold winter. You won't see flowers anywhere as bountiful and beautiful as the flowers here in interior Alaska. We also have a continuous display of Alaskan wildflowers growing throughout the summer- dotting the edges of highways, dirt roads, and driveways; providing natural landscaping to much of our Interior infrastructure.

Photographs and Links
We have many photographs of Fairbanks and places around Alaska, including two photos below. Please visit our Alaska Photo Gallery page to see some wonderful pictures of Alaska. We will also continue to add information and links on this page that may be of interest to you, so please stop in from time-to-time.

Iditarod 2003
In 2003, our city of Fairbanks played unexpected hosts to the world-famous Iditarod Dog Mushing Race. Race officials determined there would not be enough snow in Anchorage to hold the event and moved the race start almost 400 miles north to Fairbanks. Picture standing on a meandering frozen river, holding thousands of spectators, cheering and watching dog teams zip by, and you will know what it was like on the day of the race. Just one of the many exciting benefits of living in Alaska. To see more photographs of Alaska, visit our Alaska Photo Gallery and Alaska Photo Gallery 2.
