Robert Service lived in Whitehorse and Dawson City in the Yukon Territory in the early 1900s. He penned some of his most sought after poetry in Whitehorse, and later, in his log cabin overlooking Dawson City. Many of Service's poems capture the essence of the Klondike Gold Rush and life in the Yukon during that era.
After the gold rush peaked in Dawson City, stampeders continued to Alaska, where their first stop was Nome and later Fairbanks. Because of Alaska's shared gold rush history with the Klondike Gold Rush, Service's poems resonate with Alaskans and are recited at venues around the state.
We offer four of Service's top poems for your enjoyment!
